A look at what’s happening in European soccer on Thursday:
EUROPA LEAGUE
The unravelling of Ajax is proving to be one of the saddest soccer stories of the season. The Dutch giant — a four-time European champion and among the continent’s storied clubs — has made its worst ever start to a season since the advent of professional soccer in the Netherlands in 1954. Ajax has failed to win in its last eight games in all competitions — five of those have been defeats — its longest-ever run without a victory. The team is in next-to-last place in the Dutch league on the back of four straight losses and has yet to win in the Europa League, either, heading into a match at Brighton. On Monday, Ajax parted company with coach Maurice Steijn after just 11 games in charge, with former player Hedwiges Maduro taking temporary control of the team. Brighton has only one point from two games in its first season in European soccer. English teams Liverpool and West Ham are two of seven clubs on a maximum six points and they face Toulouse and Olympiakos, respectively.
EUROPA CONFERENCE LEAGUE
Last season’s runner-up Fiorentina looks to boost its status in Group F when it hosts last-place Cukaricki, a Serbian club. With two points from two draws, Fiorentina is third in the group behind Ferencvaros and Genk, who have four points each entering their match in Belgium. Fiorentina has had a strong start in Serie A, including an impressive 3-1 win at defending champion Napoli before the international break. But the Viola were also beaten 2-0 by visiting Empoli in a Tuscan derby on Monday. Also, Aston Villa visits AZ Alkmaar in Group E, where all four teams are on three points. Slovan Bratislava, Viktoria Plzen, PAOK and Fenerbahce are the only four sides that won both of their opening matches. Of those four, Fenerbahce is the only one playing at home this week, against a Ludogorets side coming off a 7-1 rout by Nordsjaelland. Maccabi Tel Aviv’s home game against Zorya Luhansk was postponed to Nov. 25 and needs to be moved to a new venue after UEFA decided that Israel will not host any European matches until further notice.
Paris Saint-Germain and AC Milan face a huge showdown in Champions League action as the Serie A powerhouses head to the French capital on October 25.
Both sides are trailing Group F leaders Newcastle United, with the Magpies securing a 4-1 win over PSG before the international break, and a 0-0 draw in Milan back in September.
Luis Enrique's charges have the edge on the Rossoneri, with three points on the board compared to two for Milan, but this clash could be crucial in their respective knockout-stage chances. Newcastle host Borussia Dortmund in the other match.
The Italians will be hoping for a change in luck after failing to score in the Champions League so far this season. Indeed, they have now gone four consecutive games in this competition without a goal, which is their worst ever run in the tournament.
Luis Enrique is still missing some key names through injury ahead of this game with Marco Asensio, Presnel Kimpembe, Nuno Mendes and Sergio Rico still absent. Keylor Navas is also struggling with a back problem.
Paris Saint-Germain rolls into its next UEFA Champions League matchup sitting in third place in French Ligue 1 with a 5-1-3 record and a league-best plus-13 goal differential. PSG has split its two Champions League matches to this point with a 2-0 victory over Borussia Dortmund in its Champions League opener and a 4-1 blowout loss to Newcastle United their last time out. Paris Saint-Germain is led by superstar Kylian Mbappé, who has eight goals in eight games.
On the AC Milan side, the club sits in second place in Italian Serie A with a 7-2-0 record that includes the second of two losses their last time out, a 1-0 setback at Juventus. Milan had won four straight league matches prior to the Juventus loss and sprinkled in a pair of scoreless draws in the UEFA Champions League, first to Newcastle United on Sept. 19 and more recently to Borussia Dortmund on Oct. 4. AC Milan is a point behind Paris Saint-Germain with those two draws, which show an offense that needs a spark but terrific defensive play.
PSG is favored to beat AC Milan with -145 odds in the money line, according to FanDuel Sportsbook. Milan goes off with +400 odds while a draw is listed at +290.
PSG will be looking to bounce back from a humbling 4-1 defeat away to Newcastle United last time out, while AC Milan have yet to register a win in their campaign so far following two goals draws.
Today's match looks set to provide some intriguing reunions, with Paris Saint Germain defender Lucas Hernandez set to play against his younger brother and Milan star Theo while PSG goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma is in line to face his former team.
