Volunteers week

1st June - 7th June is #VolunteersWeek. To celebrate it we are shining the spotlight each day on some of our members who go above and beyond to make our club great. Let’s show them our appreciation.

Today we celebrate Winston Herbert’s nemesis and ABCC super breeder , Mark Brind.

If you would like to nominate someone this week or get more involved as a volunteer at ABCC please contact Andy Alexander - a.g.alexander@hotmail.co.uk .

Name and what is your role at ABCC? Mark Brind – 53 and half § Chairperson What do you like about being a volunteer at ABCC? § I joined ABCC in 1985 as a 17 year old lad and in those days I wasn’t quite sure what life was really about, The ABCC family took me under their wing and I always say welcomed me with open arms and really went out of their way to make me feel part of the club. The club has always been ran by volunteers and as a 17 year old it was my first introduction of what a sense of belonging and the benefits of a community environment can bring and was completely blown away. So I made a commitment then that whenever I could I would try to put a back in what I had received from the club. I joined the Committee in 1988 and was event’s organiser for 5 years organising many events and creating memories that last a life time. I re-joined the committee in 2007 and became Social Chairperson for 3 years, then Playing Chairperson for 9 years and more recently Chairperson. During that time we now have a second ground, two amazing clubhouses and we are the envy of many other clubs. So for me volunteering has enabled me to help that little bit towards creating an environment for the long term and when the next 17 year old lad turns up who needs a bit of direction we have an environment that can support that.. If more people at ABCC became involved as volunteers how would that help the club? § The size of the Club now is very different to the one I stumbled upon in 1985 and the running costs are over £50,000 a year now. The more people that volunteer to help in the running of the club the more this helps keep the costs down and the ethos of the club is to create cricket for all in the local community. So the more we can reduce the running costs we can keep the subscriptions down and continue to invest in the facilities as that is our aim and not to make money so please volunteers are always welcome.
