Mr ABCC. On the Committee. Former Captain. A junior coach and team manager. Always gets stuck in at the club whatever the task at hand. Jacob would probably say yes to a game of cricket for ABCC even if it was away against John o'Groats, mid December, in the dark and he had to drive.
'Name: Jacob Short
Age: 26
Years associated with the club: 16 years
I first got involved with the cricket club when I was about 10 after my family moved to Astwood Bank from Birmingham. My dad Brindy had played for the club for several years before moving away with work and was keen to start getting involved and playing again. So he walked me and my brothers down the hill to Friday junior training and now cricket has been my life every summer since.
Over the years I've got involved in a number of ways starting with 4th team captain and then 3rd team captain before also taking on a group of very talented Under 9's for a few seasons. These were all roles that I enjoyed as I got to see the younger players develop and now much to my annoyance become better cricketers than I am.
At the start of the season, I took on a new responsibility as club secretary on the committee and I am enjoying giving input on the direction of the club but certainly need to get better at sharing meeting notes in a timely fashion.
I enjoy volunteering at the club because its a place that has given so much to me and many of my friends and I've seen first-hand what goes into the running of the club thanks to the efforts of my dad and others so I think it's important that others get that same experience that I had and its not really possible without people giving their time. Ultimately though, it's a place and community that I enjoy being part of.
If we had more people volunteering it would allow more balance for those already volunteering and probably keep people involved with the club longer. It would also allow for things to be done better and ultimately make the club environment more successful and enjoyable for the members who are part of the club junior, senior or social. If everyone can do even a little bit it'll make a big difference. '
