Volunteers week . Day 6. Claire Davies

She’s here, she’s there, she’s absolutely everywhere. Today it’s Super Claire Davies.

Name: Claire Davies

Have been with Astwood Bank at a guess since 2015.  We started going to the bank as a family, when our friends The Cooke’s (Harry was an U15 last year), asked us to join them one evening.  My son, headed out in his elastic wasted joggers and a plastic bat.  Well, the rest is history!

I was asked to mention my age, but you can forget that question!!!

In 2020 the club had a dilemma as to whether we folded the U14s boys as numbers were so low, and following a call out for some help, I put my hand up thinking I was going to help whoever, with a bit of admin.  I soon realised that I had the title of Team Manager, and five lads asking when they will be playing cricket – you learn fast!

As if that wasn’t enough, I started helping behind the bar last year, and you will see me frequenting the bar on some evenings, primarily Friday nights, sadly the wrong side of the bar!

The thing about being a volunteer for me is simple: I can give something back to a club that has invested a lot of time and skill in training my son.  I won’t mention his name, as he’ll get embarrassed, that said you can’t miss him!!

I’ve really enjoyed being Team Manager: to see how enthusiastic the children have been, how they have developed, always asking when their next fixture is.  Really enjoying the spirit of cricket!  Knowing that you have played a small partin that is priceless!

What I would say is that volunteering can take many guises, you don’t have to be so involved as to be a Team Manager, merely, seeing a full bin, and emptying it into a black bag, clearing a few empty glasses from a table, volunteering to do the bar b que one week, doesn’t mean it’s your job all season, it’s all about looking after our club.   It would really help the club if we could get a few more volunteers coming forward.

Well, I hope you’ve enjoyed reading my volunteering blog: as I come to the end of my Team Manager’s years, I would just like to say whilst at times it’s been hard work, I have thoroughly enjoyed my time being Team Manager and seeing how the children have developed over the last three years, and I’ve worked with some great skilled coaches.  The children are not only a credit to the club, their parents, but more importantly themselves!!
