#VolunteersWeek Day 6
Only one person to feature after a classic Village knockout Sunday…
My name is Louise Alexander (AKA The Magic Fairy), and I am quite old. I’ve been involved at Astwood Bank Cricket Club since 1986 when my eldest son Andrew (now the Junior Chairman) started playing. I started volunteering around 20 years ago, picking up odd little jobs behind the scenes that needed doing which the committee members didn’t have time to do. My main role at the club is Club Gofer.
My husband, John Alexander, was the Chairman for 13 years during this time and was still Chairman when he died suddenly in February 2019.
A job which I’m very proud of (started several years ago by the club’s beloved Andy Thomas, who sadly died 5 years ago), which ground to a halt when COVID arrived, was creating a Saturday and Sunday Teas Rota every season for our 5 Saturday teams and Sunday teams. Over 60 games. Every summer, we had between 35-40 Tea Ladies/Gentlemen taking turns to provide a cricket tea for 22 players for every home game from mid April till mid September. Even the club president, John Daws, was a Tea Lady.
John and I ran the bar between us. I am still very involved in running the bar, and gofering in general.
Many people probably think on a busy Thursday and Friday night that the bar staff are paid employees. We’re not! All volunteers. Volunteering is the ethos of the club and I hope it always will be. We’re always crying out for people to help in all sorts of ways. Just small things, like collecting empty glasses, putting rubbish in the bins, is a huge help. Please, get involved. It’s very fulfilling.
I am the 1st team number 1 supporter - haven’t missed a 1st team game, home and away, for several years. I regard Astwood Bank Cricket Club as my second family.
